WA Senator, Michaelia Cash. Senator, good morning. More than 90% of West Aussies are now concerned about inflation and we’re told more than half are worried about future rate hikes. It seems we are heading for some really tough times.

Senator Cash

Absolutely, and that is now more than evident. Life is not easy under Anthony Albanese. If you’ve got an average mortgage of say $610,000, you will now be paying in addition to what you were paying, around $500 a month. So what we are now seeing under the Albanese government- who let’s remember went to the election saying life was actually going to be easier under them- you are seeing higher interest rates, higher inflation, grocery prices are becoming unattainable, let alone the pain people are feeling at the bowser. I think the most disappointing thing for Western Australians is that Labor has no answer for them. After nine years in opposition, it is unacceptable that they are not able to today stand in front of the people of Western Australia and Australia and say to them, this is what we will do to bring your prices down. They are failing within weeks of being elected. That should worry all Western Australians.

Journalist

But Senator, it is just weeks since they were elected. Surely, this is the nine years of government that your side of politics has delivered the economy and these circumstances to Western Australians.

Senator Cash

They are in government. They provided an economic statement last week. And guess what? It said nothing about what they would do as a government to ensure they ease the cost of living on Australians. I think what is more worrying for Australians and Western Australians again, one of the promises they went to the election with, they will lower energy prices by $275. They have already, but weeks after being elected, thrown that promise out the door. They have walked away from it and what is worse, today we wake up to see they’ve done a deal with the Australian Greens in relation to their climate bill, the Australian Greens! We need to know what this deal is going to do for mum and dad Western Australians and the price they are paying for their electricity. Life is not easy under Anthony Albanese. The bad news for all of us is that is now well and truly evident.

Journalist

Well that will come in the legislation. I mean, the argument here is that the Coalition dealt themselves out of those negotiations by- carte blanche you wouldn’t wouldn’t vote for it.

Senator Cash

We were able to exceed our emissions targets without the need for legislation. Even Labor’s own minister has admitted the legislation itself is unnecessary. But what is worse is when you look at the overseas experience, when you legislate a target, guess what it does? Hello Green activists. Hello taking legal action on major infrastructure projects, delay in major infrastructure projects, trickle down delay in building a road in Australia. Guess who gets to pay for all of that? The Australian taxpayer and again, life is already expensive. Life is getting more expensive. Why would Labor now get into bed with the Australian Greens to do something that is just not necessary, but worse than that, is only going to put upward pressure on the price that the average Australian pays for their electricity?

Journalist

Michaelia, we’ll all keep an eye on those electricity bills. Appreciate your time this morning.

Senator Cash

Great to be with you.
