ALBANESE GOVERNMENT SHOULD IMMEDIATELY APPROVE EXTENDING THE LIFE OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA’S NORTH WEST SHELF GAS HUB

The Albanese Government should approve extending the life of Karratha’s North West Shelf gas hub before Christmas.

The Western Australian government last week gave the go ahead for the gas plant to continue operating until 2070.

Senator Michaelia Cash said there was no reason for Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek to delay the process any longer.

“She should just get on with it now the State Government has approved the extension,’’ Senator Cash said.

“The process has been ongoing for six years and Minister Plibersek can now give certainty to all involved by moving swiftly,’’ she said.

“The North West Shelf has been an economic powerhouse over its 40 years of operation delivering over $40 billion in taxes and royalties since 1984,’’ Senator Cash said.

“It has provided a reliable source of domestic gas for Western Australia and has been providing energy for millions of people around the world.’’ she said.

“Continuing the North West Shelf will also mean protecting hundreds of jobs, mostly here in Western Australia,’’ Senator Cash said.

“We also know that the ongoing supply of gas helps to keep energy prices down and is vital to the future prosperity of Australia,’’ she said.
