DESPERATE AUSSIES NEED SECOND JOBS TO PAY THEIR BILLS

Today’s labour force data confirms what Australians already know: they are working harder for less under Labor.

While it is always encouraging to see Australians in jobs, we know this is coming at the expense of more family time and more time doing the things they enjoy, and is being driven by bills that keep rising.

The only thing keeping Australians’ heads above water in Labor’s cost of living crisis is the strong jobs market Labor inherited from the Coalition.

Australians are being forced to take on second jobs to pay their bills under the Albanese Government’s cost of living crisis.

Labour Force data released today shows unemployment rose slightly to 4% in December and that Australians are working more hours to keep their families afloat.

The Australia Bureau of Statistics, Labour Account, the ABS’s most comprehensive study of the labour market, shows that since Labor took office, the number of multiple job holders has grown by over 130,000 or over 15%.

Almost 1 million Australians (986,400) are now working multiple jobs, the highest since records began in 1994.

Since Labor took office, the number of multiple job holders has averaged 937,600 – more than the 600,500 historical average since 1994 and the 714,300 average under the Coalition.

Multiple job holding has increased the most in mining (21.3%); retail (12.7%); transport, postal and warehousing (12.2%); finance and insurance (12.1%); professional services (13.1%); and non-market services (24.3%) on average across health, education, and public administration).

Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor said a record number of Australians are now being forced to take on more work to pay the bills.

“For so many hardworking Australians, one job is just not cutting it anymore. People who are already working hard are now being pushed to their limits, sacrificing precious time with family, their health, and their personal well-being just to make ends meet,” Mr Taylor said.

“Australians simply cannot afford another three years of Labor.”

Shadow Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Senator Michaelia Cash said: “The stark reality for many Australians is they just can’t make ends meet by working one job.”

“Labor’s cost of living crisis has driven hundreds of thousands more Australians to take up second jobs just to be able to pay their bills and put food on the table,’’ Senator Cash said.

“This has all been driven by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s bad decisions and wrong priorities which have made Australians worse off,’’ she said.
