NORTH WEST SHELF DELAYS BY LABOR A DISGRACE

Under the cover of a budget week, the Labor Government have shamefully pushed out the timeframe of a decision on the North West Shelf extension until 31 May 2025. This cynical political move delays a decision timeline a further 60 days from its already-deferred date of 31 March, and confirms that the extension could become a casualty of a minority Greens-Teal-Labor Government after the election.

Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Senator Michaelia Cash, said that this move is emblematic of the Albanese Government’s approach to Western Australia and the resources industry, “It is an absolute disgrace and act of cynical political manipulation that the Albanese Labor Government has further delayed the decision on the extension of the North West Shelf gas hub until after the Federal election.”

“To quietly push it out until May 31, on Budget day, beggars belief and is emblematic of this dishonest Government.”

“Western Australians deserve to know the future of this vital project before the Federal Election.”

Shadow Environment Minister Jonno Duniam said that the Albanese Government has failed in their responsibilities to make sound economic decisions, “This is not the behaviour of a pro-jobs government that wants to responsibly balance the environment with sustainable economic projects, it is one of a government that is ideologically opposed to gas and, cynically, does not want to lose inner-city votes to the Greens.”

“This project would bring on more supply and put downward pressure on power prices. Gas is important to Australia’s economic future. The Albanese Government are blind to this reality and are preferring to see electricity prices rise through their renewables-only ‘transition’.”

“Tanya Plibersek doesn’t want to make a decision that will lose her votes to the Greens in her inner-city electorate. She wants to hold onto her own job, not support the jobs of Western Australians.” The Coalition has promised to make a decision on the North West Shelf extension within 30 days of coming to Government as part of its plan to fix Labor’s energy crisis and get our country back on track.
