The High Court dismissed the case of an array of immigration detainees, preventing the potential release of another 200 non-citizens. Labor is probably hoping it will detract from the revelation that when the High Court freed the first cohort from detention last November, Home Affairs only started drafting emergency legislation to monitor the criminals released two days after . Even worse Home Affairs officials held meetings to discuss the upcoming ruling in the months leading up to the court’s decision but guess who wasn’t there – immigration minister Andrew Giles, and yet I kid you This is all still somehow Peter Dutton’s fault. I’m joined now by the Shadow Attorney General of Michaelia Cash. Thank you so much for joining me Michaelia and what is your reaction to that, first of all?
Senator Cash
When is this government, when is this Minister finally going to take responsibility for the detainee debacle which was and is of their own making? The decision Erin that we saw today, it was an uncontroversial one. It was one that the legal commentators expected. And what the High Court today said was a person cannot engineer their release into the community if they don’t co-operate. It is a decision that quite frankly, as I’ve said, the legal experts, they thought without doubt. We finally see Minister Giles front the camera and instead of taking any responsibility for this detainee debacle, what does he do? He blames Peter Dutton, and quite frankly, I think that says a lot about the attitude of this government, no care and no responsibility.
Erin Molan
What do you make at Michaelia about the two days after the release that this legislation being rushed through – I mean, surely there would have been some forethought to maybe preparing for not even a worst case but a likely outcome.
Senator Cash
Well that’s exactly why governments regardless of who is in office, you always prepare for the best case scenario, and you really hope that’s what you’re going to get. But you also prepare for the worst case scenario. This government quite frankly, is making it up as it goes. And Mr. Albanese no care, no responsibility. Erin Mr. Albanese was in Western Australia, this week. He was asked a question by a journalist. Do does your Government owe Ninette Simons, the Western Australian who was allegedly violently bashed by a detainee part of the NZYQ cohort an apology. Do you not what he said? He said, No. This is a man who despite all the decisions made by his government refuses to take any form of responsibility. And as I’ve said, Ninette Simons is now the face of Mr. Albanese’s failure when it comes to keeping Australians sad.
Erin Molan
Treasurer Jim Chalmers has been raked over the coals for encouraging families to have more babies because of course we’ve got so much cash to spend the babies are so cheap – seriously.
Senator Cash
Well seriously I think the one thing though, that Mr. Chalmers did say that was correct was this. It’s expensive to raise a child. Well Mr. Chalmers you are correct. Because under your government – food inflation 10%, housing 12%, electricity and gas 18% and 25% respectively, a person who has a mortgage of $750,000 paying an additional $24,000 a year because of the increase in interest rates. So Mr. Chalmers, guess what? You were correct in saying it’s expensive to raise a child. I mean, we always said life wasn’t going to be easy under Mr. Albanese. And guess what, Erin, we were right.

Now turning to the federal government and their recently released a future gas. The Prime Minister has committed to using gas through to 2050 and beyond to reach net zero but there’s a bit of internal backlash with backbenchers just speaking out. It’s just another thing that looks like a mess.
Senator Cash
Well I have to say what the backbenchers are saying probably reflects what Mr. Albanese really does think. Because you just have to look at the actions of this government in relation to gas over the last two years that demonize the gas companies, but refuse to acknowledge that the answer to bringing prices down is getting more gas into the market. But worse than that, they do everything they can to ensure that there are no future or new gas projects. So Mr. Albanese he can say what you like today but quite frankly, your actions to date show what your government really does think of gas and your actions to date have made Australians are paying the price, electricity and gas up under Mr. Albanese, 18% and 25% respectively. All Australians want to know is when you going to listen and when you going to put in place policies that actually bring the price of things down.tr
Erin Molan
Michaelia Cash wouldn’t that be nice. Thank you so much for joining us.
